Is WhatsApp Business auto-reply enough for a small business? When is it not?

Short answer: WhatsApp Business's built-in auto-replies — away message, greeting message, quick replies — are free and sufficient if the goal is to tell customers you will reply later. They stop helping when the customer wants an answer, not an acknowledgement: "how much", "is it in stock", "how many days to ship to Sabah". For questions like that, "Thanks, we'll reply shortly" is the message customers skip past.
What are Malaysians actually searching for?
Type "auto reply whatsapp" into Google Malaysia and the suggestions that appear are: "auto reply whatsapp business", "auto reply whatsapp setting", and "auto reply whatsapp apk mod". Many people are searching, and many are searching for something free. This article answers all three.
What can WhatsApp Business auto-reply do?
| Tool | What it does | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Away message | Automatic message when you are away — can be scheduled by the hour | The same one message to everyone, regardless of the question |
| Greeting message | First message to a new customer or one silent for 14 days | Once only, fixed content |
| Quick replies | Type "/" and pick a ready-made line | You still have to be there, and press send |
WhatsApp itself describes away messages this way:
"When away messages are enabled, customers who message you will automatically receive a customizable message, indicating that you're busy or away from your phone."

All three tools are useful. An away message at 11pm beats silence. Quick replies save typing time. These are not bad tools.
Where do they stop helping?
| Customer types | Built-in auto-reply | AI that reads your business information |
|---|---|---|
| "how much?" | "We'll reply shortly" | "RM35 each, 3 for RM99, free shipping" |
| "navy in stock?" | "We'll reply shortly" | "Navy has 2 left in size M. Shall I hold one for you?" |
| "ship to sabah hw many days" | "We'll reply shortly" | "Sabah 3–5 days, shipping RM10" |
| "I want to talk to the owner" | "We'll reply shortly" | Stops, sends a summary to the owner |
| 40-second voice note | "We'll reply shortly" | Listens, understands, answers |
The middle column is not wrong. It is just not an answer.
Is the free option useless, then?
No. For some businesses an away message is enough: the owner replies personally within the hour during office hours, volume is low, customers are patient. If that is you, stay with it.
Signs you have crossed the line:
- The same sentence typed more than 10 times a day.
- Customers ask at night, get answered in the morning, and no longer reply.
- You are thinking of hiring someone to "just reply on WhatsApp" (see Hiring staff to reply on WhatsApp — is it worth it?).
What about the "apk mod"?
Modified versions of WhatsApp are one of the things WhatsApp specifically lists as a cause for bans — their official page says "don't… use modified versions of WhatsApp". A number built up over years is not worth risking for a free auto-reply that might take it away. The causes of bans, with the full quotations, are here.
How is Merpati different from an away message?
An away message sends one fixed sentence. Merpati reads the customer's question, finds the answer in the information the owner typed, and answers that question — price, stock, shipping, with context. When there is no answer, it says it will check with the owner. When the customer asks for a human, it stops. WhatsApp's away message can stay on for the hours when the AI is switched off.
