Why do WhatsApp business accounts get banned — what is the real cause?

Why do WhatsApp business accounts get banned — what is the real cause?

Short answer: WhatsApp bans accounts based on reports and blocks from recipients and on patterns of unsolicited messaging — not on how many messages come in to you. The three causes WhatsApp itself lists: messaging people who never contacted you, continuing after someone asks you to stop, and overusing broadcasts until people report them. Whatever tool you use, those three behaviours are what decide it.

What does WhatsApp itself list as causes for a ban?

From the official WhatsApp Help Center page How to use WhatsApp responsibly, section "Practices to avoid":

"Unwanted messages: If a contact asks you to stop messaging them, you should remove the contact from your address book and refrain from contacting them again."
"Over-using broadcast lists: Messages sent using a broadcast list will only be received when users have added your phone number to their contact list. Please keep in mind, frequent use of broadcast messages may lead people to report your messages, and we ban accounts that are reported multiple times."
"Communicate with known contacts: Only send messages to those who have contacted you first or have requested you contact them on WhatsApp."

All three are about who you contact and whether they want it. None is about how quickly you reply to people who contacted you first.

Can replying to customers who messaged first get you banned?

WhatsApp answers this directly:

"Boosting content may drive more people to message you on WhatsApp, but receiving many messages at once will not result in an account ban."
— WhatsApp Help Center, Unauthorized use of automated or bulk messaging on WhatsApp

A customer messages you, you reply — that is a conversation they started. That is not what WhatsApp is hunting for.

What has to be admitted honestly?

On the same page, WhatsApp also writes:

"Our products are not intended for bulk or automated messaging, both of which have always been a violation of our Terms of Service."

That sentence exists, and we will not pretend it does not. What WhatsApp writes is that automation is not what their product is for. What WhatsApp does — according to the "responsibly" page above — is ban accounts that are repeatedly reported for unwanted messages.

Which means: no tool can promise "you won't get banned", Merpati included. Anyone who promises it has not read WhatsApp's page. What you can control is how your number behaves — and that is what decides it.

How is Merpati built around these rules?

WhatsApp ruleHow Merpati behaves
Only contact people who contacted you firstThe AI only replies to incoming messages. It does not look up numbers, does not add people, does not send to external lists.
Stop when askedIn broadcasts to your own customers, a reply of "stop", "don't want", "unsubscribe" flags that number — the next message is not sent to them. "Start" reopens it.
Broadcasts only reach people who saved your numberBroadcasts go to customers who have bought from you or asked you something — not purchased lists, not numbers scraped from groups.
Do not be the annoying messagePrecise answers to the customer's own questions. People report nuisance; people do not report answers to questions they asked.

What if you want the fully official route?

The route WhatsApp provides for businesses is the WhatsApp Business Platform (the official API) — a registered number, Meta-approved templates, and no "unauthorized" question. It takes more work to set up and has a per-message cost, but it is the safest path for businesses sending high volume. For most small businesses that just want customers answered when they ask, an existing number plus the four rules above is enough.
