How long does it take to set up a WhatsApp AI for a small business? Do you need a new number?

Short answer: Connecting the WhatsApp number you already have — the one customers have saved — takes about a minute, using a pairing code from your phone (the same way you link WhatsApp Web). No new number, nothing for customers to install, no IT person needed. What takes time is typing in your business information: prices, shipping, policies. For most small shops that is one afternoon — and an afternoon worth spending even without an AI.
Do you need a new number?
No. The number you use now — the one on your business card and shop sticker — is the one that gets connected. Customers keep messaging the same number and have no idea anything changed, except that replies come fast.
| Step | Time | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| Sign up with a Google account | 1 minute | Owner |
| Connect the number: the dashboard gives an 8-character pairing code → WhatsApp on your phone → Linked Devices → Link with phone number → enter the code | 1 minute | Owner |
| Type in business information — the 10 most frequent questions first | 30 minutes – 1 afternoon | Owner |
| Test in the test area, then switch on | 15 minutes | Owner |
Prefer scanning a QR code from a desktop? That works too. The pairing code is simply the route that does not need a computer.
Do customers need to install anything?
No. They use ordinary WhatsApp. This is why WhatsApp was chosen rather than a "live chat" on a website: the Department of Statistics Malaysia reports that 99.6% of Malaysians use a mobile phone and 98.3% use the internet in 2025. Customers are already on WhatsApp; nobody has to be invited somewhere else.
So what takes the time?
Typing in the business information — and this part reveals how much has only ever lived in the owner's head:
- Prices at what quantity — "3 for RM99" was never written down.
- Which areas get cash on delivery, which are shipping only.
- Delivery times — Peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak all differ.
- The exchange policy — it exists, but was never written.
What you are really doing is not "setting up an AI"; it is writing your business SOP for the first time. After that, when you hire someone or take a holiday, the SOP exists.
How do you start without it becoming a burden?
- Open WhatsApp, scroll back a week, write down the 10 questions that come in most often. That is 80% of what customers will ask.
- Switch on with those 10. Add more as customers ask new things.
- If you already have two years of customer chats — the answers are already in there. Merpati can read old chats (with the owner's permission) and learn your reply style: the "kak", the "shall I hold one for you", the single emoji. You do not start from zero.
How long before the AI can be trusted?
A week — not because of setup, but because the owner needs to watch it answer real customers and add whatever was missed. The five tests to run before switching it on are here.
Time it yourself
Sign up at merpati.my with a Google account, connect your existing number with the pairing code, and type in those 10 questions. If it takes more than an afternoon, tell us what was slow.
