WhatsApp Business already has its own AI. Why pay for another one?

WhatsApp Business already has its own AI. Why pay for another one?

Short answer: Yes, WhatsApp Business has its own AI — Meta Business Agent, rolled out to every country on 3 June 2026, and free to start. It is enough if your customers ask simple questions and you do not mind the AI learning from your social posts and catalogue. It is not enough when you want an AI that answers only from information you wrote yourself, stays quiet when it does not know, and stops the moment a customer asks for a human. And Meta has already said it: the free version is heading for a paid subscription.

What does Meta give you for free?

From Meta's official announcement, 3 June 2026:

"We're now expanding our Business Agent to businesses of all sizes globally, so you can have yours up and running within minutes, responding in your customers' local languages using your tone."
— Meta Newsroom, Be There for Every Customer With Meta Business Agent

Meta lists five capabilities: answering questions about your business, recommending products from your catalogue, booking appointments and qualifying leads, letting you decide when a team member steps in, and closing sales. More than a million businesses already use it, according to Meta's figures.

If you have never used anything before, try this one first. It is free, and it lives inside the app you already open every day.

Free until when?

The line most people miss, in the same announcement:

"…getting started is free. In the coming months, businesses will access the agent through paid subscription offerings, with options for businesses of every size."
— Meta Newsroom, 3 June 2026

So the right question is not "why pay when there is a free one". The right question is: once both are paid, which one does the job your business actually needs?

When is WhatsApp's built-in AI genuinely enough?

  • Your customers' questions are repetitive and simple — opening hours, location, is it in stock.
  • Your business information really is complete in the WhatsApp catalogue and your Facebook/Instagram posts.
  • You do not mind the AI learning from old posts, including ones that are no longer accurate.
  • You are a one-person operation with low volume, and you want something live in five minutes.

If all of the above describes you — switch on Business Agent and stop reading here.

When does your business need something different?

The middle column is written from what Meta announced on 3 June 2026 — not from our own testing of their product. If Meta adds capabilities, this table will be updated.

How does Merpati stop the AI from making things up?

This is the difference that matters most, and it is not about "whose AI is smarter". The AI inside Merpati is only given the information you typed. When a customer's question does not match any of it, the AI is not called at all — a fixed reply goes out instead: it will check with the owner. A price or an opening hour that does not exist in your information cannot appear in a reply. The full explanation is in Does the AI that replies to your customers use your business information — or make it up?

What do we recommend?

  1. Try Business Agent for free for a week.
  2. Count two things: how many times it answered something you never stated, and how many times a customer asked for a human and it did not stop.
  3. If both are zero — stay with Meta. You save money.
  4. If not — that is when you need an AI you control.

Try it with your own number

Merpati connects the WhatsApp number you already have; you sign up with a Google account, no card needed. Type in the 10 questions that come in most often, then test it with a question you deliberately left out — and see whether it stays quiet. Sign up at merpati.my.
