What happens if WhatsApp disconnects while the AI is handling customers?

This is the question I get most. Not "is the AI any good", not "how much does it cost". This one:
"If my WhatsApp disconnects, what happens?"
I understand why. When you hand customer replies over to something, the first thing you want to know is not what happens when it works — it is what happens when it does not.
I asked the same question myself. Here is what I learned, including the part I do not like.
Why does WhatsApp disconnect at all?
Because the connection depends on your phone, the same way WhatsApp Web does.
The phone stays flat too long. You log out of all devices. You change handsets. Sometimes WhatsApp itself drops an old session without telling anyone.
None of that means something is broken. It is part of how WhatsApp works — and anyone who tells you a connection will never drop has not run one long enough.
Do customer messages get lost while it is disconnected?
No. Messages still reach your WhatsApp as usual.
This is the part people misunderstand most. A dropped connection does not mean your number is dead — customers can still message you, and those messages are still on your phone.
What happens is that the AI cannot read them or reply during that window. So a customer sends a question, and waits.
I am not going to pretend that costs nothing. Three hours offline overnight is three hours of unanswered questions — which is exactly why you need to know early, not the next morning.
How would I know it dropped?
You get an email. Not once — several times, spaced further apart the longer it stays down.
The reason is simple: one email is easy to miss. If you catch the first, good. If you swipe it away by accident, there is a second. If you are away, the third is waiting when you return.
And in the dashboard, a disconnected number is marked plainly — not buried in a settings page you have to go looking for.
I think this matters for a reason that is not technical. A system that fails loudly is better than one that fails quietly. Quiet failure is the kind you discover through an angry customer.
How long does reconnecting take?
Scan the QR again. About a minute.
Same number. Your knowledge is still there. Old chats are still there. You are not setting anything up again — just reconnecting the session that dropped.
After that the AI starts answering again.
So should I worry about this?
Worry about the right thing.
What you do not need to worry about: lost messages, a dead number, redoing your setup, customers seeing an error.
What you should understand: connections can drop, and how fast you notice decides how much it costs you. That is what the warnings are for.
If you are evaluating any tool for handling customer replies — it does not have to be this one — the question I would ask is not "how much can it answer".
Ask: what happens when it fails, and how will I know?
The answer to that tells you more about a tool than any feature list will.
